About North Draft Heating & Cooling

A Grand Rapids heating and cooling contractor that draws the plan before it quotes the job.

Named for the cold spot by the window

Every old West Michigan house has one: the chair by the north wall that nobody sits in from November to March. Tom Kowalski spent twelve years installing equipment for other contractors and kept seeing the same thing. New furnaces went in, and the cold spot stayed.

The problem was rarely the furnace. It was air going to the wrong places. North Draft started in 2011 with one van and one rule: before we quote, we draw how air moves through your house, room by room.

We still work that way, with a crew of fourteen.

Floor plan drawing with dashed copper supply runs from a central air handler to each room, labeled with the airflow each room needs in cubic feet per minute.
A room-by-room load sheet. Each room gets the airflow it needs, not an even share.
